Requirements for a Locality Study

A part of the National Curriculum Programme of Study for Geography at all Key Stages requires that students to be taught about Places.

At Key Stage 1 this involves studying two localities. One should be the locality of the school itself, (school buildings, grounds and the surrounding area within easy access). The contrasting locality chosen for study should be similar in size to the locality of the school.

Many Primary schools in the UK study Castries in St. Lucia as the contrasting locality to their school. Whatever locality is chosen pupils should be taught:

I have been provided with many materials by Wendy Morgan (Past President of the Geographical Association) to assist you in teaching about Castries, St. Lucia. Some of these materials could also be adapted to teach about another locality if you don't study Castries. In addition to these materials you will find other free resources on St. Lucia, including maps, and a 'Rainforest Walk' (useful for the literacy hour) in the education section of the Worldaware site.

GeoNet materials available about Castries and St. Lucia: (not all sections are yet online).
