What benefits does the science park bring to Cambridge?

Hi-technology industries provide jobs, they now employ almost one quarter of workers in the Cambridge area. Other companies have developed in Cambridge to supply the hi-technology firm with equipment, services etc. These companies will also employ people, in this way a multiplier effect begins to develop.

Will Cambridge have problems if it relies too heavily on hi-tech industries?

In the summer of 1997 Microsoft announced they would work with Cambridge University and build a research base in the city. The company plans to invest £50 million in this research centre. However space for new developments within the city has almost run out. Most new developments will have to be located in Cambridge's green belt or between the northern edge of the city and the A14. House prices in Cambridge are also rising and traffic congestion is increasing as more and more people work in the city.
