Project 1 - Where in the world?

Materials required:

atlas
coloured pencils or crayons

What to do:

The following list shows the countries from which visitors to the GeoNet have come, and the month in which a visit from that country was first recorded. This list will be updated at the end of every month. On your outline map of the world shade in each country when it appears in the list. (You might want to use a different colour for each year to make your map clearer.)

Think about:

Are the shaded countries on your map evenly scattered around the world?
Are there certain parts of the world which don't seem to be visiting the GeoNet? (Hint - think about access to the Internet and don't forget not everybody speaks English!)
Does the actual distance from England seem to have any effect on the location of visitors to the GeoNet?
What is happening to the number of new countries being added each month? Why do you think this is?

Project 2 - Question Time on Environmental Issues.

What to do:

Divide the class into groups of three (so they can have access to a computer each) after being introduced to various environmental issues. Then ask them to imagine they are going to be interviewed by an audience on Question Time. (They are to take the role of the environment minister.) Spend about 50 minutes researching the topic ready for any questions posed. The students should pose their own questions and find out answers using the Internet.
