'World Geography Core Book'

by Andy Beaumont, Jane Herrington, Rob Wheatley (Series editor - David Lambert) - published by Cambridge University Press

World Geography (Core Book) - UK£10.95 (US$21.95) (ISBN 0-521-45697-5).

This text is aims to provide the core knowledge required by students on GCSE courses, (particularly the Avery Hill syllabuses). It is divided into five main sections:

  • Population Geography
  • The Geography of Settlements
  • Geography and Ecology
  • Landforms, Landscapes and Physical Processes
  • Economic Activity and the Geography of Development

There are plenty of activities spread throughout the text. They range from questions testing comprehension of the text to data response and decision making exercises. As well as activities there are several case studies to reinforce the main themes in the book.(A separate book consisting of sixteen case studies is also available.)

World Geography makes an attempt to get students thinking more deeply about geography. It covers five topics in a series of double page spreads entitled 'Thinking Geography'.

  • The urge to draw boundaries
  • Looking for bias
  • People and environment: the balance of power
  • Globalisation
  • The European dimension

Whilst this is a laudable attempt to break away from the rigid structure imposed by exam requirements the book does not neglect those dreaded exams facing students at the end of their studies. There are sections on Preparing for the exams and Specimen exam papers both of which contain sound advice for students. There is also a glossary to help students develop their geography vocabulary.

All in all this is a succinct and attractively presented textbook. Well worth a look if you are seeking coverage of GCSE material within a single textbook.

My thanks to Leena Chauhan at Cambridge University Press for providing a review copy of this book.
