I hope you'll find that this section contains some useful advice about teaching geography. If you ever want advice or assistance with your work I'm only to willing to help, as long as you're able to give me a few days in which to reply.

There are a number of resources I have developed (or am in the process of developing) which are not commercially viable or are in a trial (beta) format, these will be made available for your use via this page. I also have a large database of useful articles from the Geographical Magazine and the National Geographic, so if you're searching for information on a country or topic let me know and I'll try and point you in the right direction.

If you have any suggestions about the type of topics you would like to see covered in these pages tell me and I'll do my best to provide them. Please send me your own tips and advice and I'll integrate them into this page, (with due acknowledgement of course).

Don't forget to look in the Curriculum section for materials aimed at particular courses and ages. You may find some of the reviews of geography related materials and the list of geography software useful. There are also links to a whole variety of different sources of geography information.

Recommended resources for teaching

I've been asked about the textbooks and other resources I'd recommend for teaching secondary/high school level geography, this is a brief run down of my suggestions.

Textbooks

For A/IB level students 'Geography An Integrated Approach' (second edition) by David Waugh - published by Nelson.

For students aged 14/15/16 'The Wider World' by David Waugh - published by Nelson, (ISBN 0-17-434309-4).

For students aged 11/12/13 there are a number of series of books possibly the best would be the Longman Geography Series, published by Addison Wesley Longman. In addition to this 'Basic Map Reading' by Keith Gillard published by Longman ISBN (0 582 036879), is a very useful book at this level.

If however you have a firm programme of your own at this level and are looking for a single book to support it then try 'Core Geography' by Keith Grimwade and Greg Hart, published by Hodder and Stoughton, which has a really excellent 'Teacher's Resource Pack' to accompany it (see the reviews section for more details).

All students would need an up to date hardback atlas, (softback editions are cheaper but they fall apart within a year or two thereby costing more money in the long term).

Software

Take a look at the GeoNet software guide, there's a lot of geography software out there.

What should be in our departmental handbook?

This should contain the following:
  • Title page
  • Contents page
  • List of staff - including names, qualifications, teaching schedules and (if appropriate) specific responsibilities
  • A statement of the department's policies for such things as the acceptance of late work, homework, fieldtrips etc.
  • Copies of any standard letters, guidelines etc. (e.g. the forms on which you record details of textbooks issued to pupils)
  • List of useful addresses and contacts (speakers, publishers, exam boards, charities etc.). Check the address book for many useful contacts.
  • Course outlines for all year/age groups
  • Inventory of department resources
  • Inventory of resources held outside the department (useful library books, shared equipment etc.)
