1953 - IRON LUNG

The Iron Lung was the first life support system. It was invented in 1928 to help paralysed people breath. Some people lived inside these during the polio epidemic of 1952/3, a few spent the rest of their lives in an Iron Lung.

The Iron Lung at first was very expensive and scarce, but the cost later fell with mass production, from £1000 to £100.

The Iron Lung was made in the Morris car factory.
