Brighton, United Kingdom
MEDNET 96, the European Congress of the Internet in Medicine, is an international meeting which aims to bring together researchers, developers and users involved in the application of the Internet in Medicine. The Congress, which will provide a forum for the exploration of the rapidly developing relationship between medical sciences and the Internet, is relevant to all medical and health care professionals, as well as those involved in the development and application of the new technological opportunities offered to the medical field by the Internet and through the use of the World-Wide-Web.
MEDNET 96 will feature a commercial exhibition which will provide visitors with the opportunity to witness the extended involvement and innovations made by commercial organisations in this fast-progressing area.
The Conference language will be English.

The town of Brighton is situated in the county of Sussex on the South East coast of England, very close to the M23 motorway and with easy access to London Gatwick and Heathrow International Airports.
The last few years have seen an unprecedented increase in the number of individuals and institutions using the Internet particularly with the developments of the World-Wide-Web (WWW) which the medical community and healthcare industries have not been excluded from.
MEDNET 96 was originally conceived in December 1995 as a result of developments that took place within Brighton Health Care NHS Trust in providing information on the WWW. In July 1995 a meeting was held at University of Sussex - Towards an Information Superhighway in Medicine which was attended by 130 individuals from throughout the United Kingdom. Subsequent collaboration between Brighton Health Care and the University of Sussex on the use of the Internet in Medicine identified the need for a further meeting, thus MEDNET 96 was born.
Numerous abstracts of an exceedingly high standard were submitted to the Programme Committee and a programme has been assembled which will provide a cross-section of developments in the use of Internet in Medicine. As well as oral presentations authors will be providing posters sumarising the key points of their work.
In recognition that many individuals will not be able to participate in this inaugural event we will be hosting a Virtual Conference on the Internet. It will enable individuals who are unable to attend the Congress to engage in discussions led by speakers at the meeting.
The Congress will feature workshops on specific topics ranging from Internet security to virtual and enhanced reality in medicine. Most conferences have a commercial trade exhibition as an integral part and MEDNET 96 is no exception. Visitors to the exhibition will be able to witness the developments made by commercial organisations.
MEDNET 96 also sees the launch of the the European Society of the Internet in Medicine.
We can look forward to a Congress Banquet in the historic Old Ship Hotel. Delegates will be able to enjoy the atmosphere of a room once the scene of performances by Paganini. Our guest speaker will be Professor Sir Harry Kroto of Sussex University, the 1996 Nobel Laurete for Chemistry.
On behalf of the Local Organising Committee of MEDNET 96 I extend a warm welcome to all delegates and particularly our overseas guests. I hope you all have an enjoyable and stimulating Congress.

The Virtual Conference has been organised in recognition that many individuals will not be able to attend the congress in person but would like to participate. In addition many of those who are able to attend may wish to engage in further discussion surrounding the principle themes of the conference after the meeting. This virtual conference is intended to fulfill both of those needs. The virtual conference will be offically unveiled on October 14th at the meeting in Brighton and present plans are to keep the conference open at least until the end of November and possibly until the end of 1996. At that time, discussions will be frozen but will remain on-line for others to review.
Conference proceedings will be published in electronic form on CD-ROM. Further, outstanding papers will be invited for learned journal publication.
The Congress is being administered by CASA (Centre for Advanced Software Applications), School of Cognitive and Computing Sciences, University of Sussex.

During the Congress, there will be various opportunities to enjoy Brighton and the beautiful surrounding Sussex countryside. These include a civic reception with the Mayor of Brighton and a lavish banquet at the historic Old Ship Hotel. In addition there will be the opportunity to visit the exotic Royal Pavilion, home of the Prince Regent during the early nineteenth century, explore the narrow winding Lanes and visit historic castles such as Arundel Castle (where the Madness of King George was filmed) and Hever Castle, home to Anne Boleyn, second wife of Henry VIII. For the more adventurous, the sweeping Sussex countryside can be seen from a hot-air balloon.
