Message from the Chairman

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to Brighton and to MEDNET 96 - the inaugural European Congress of the Internet in Medicine.

The last few years have seen an unprecedented increase in the number of individuals and institutions using the Internet particularly with the developments of the World-Wide-Web (WWW) which the medical community and healthcare industries have not been excluded from.

MEDNET 96 was originally conceived in December 1995 as a result of developments that took place within Brighton Health Care NHS Trust in providing information on the WWW. In July 1995 a meeting was held at University of Sussex - Towards an Information Superhighway in Medicine which was attended by 130 individuals from throughout the United Kingdom. Subsequent collaboration between Brighton Health Care and the University of Sussex on the use of the Internet in Medicine identified the need for a further meeting, thus MEDNET 96 was born.

Numerous abstracts of an exceedingly high standard were submitted to the Programme Committee and a programme has been assembled which will provide a cross-section of developments in the use of Internet in Medicine. As well as oral presentations authors will be providing posters sumarising the key points of their work.

In recognition that many individuals will not be able to participate in this inaugural event we will be hosting a Virtual Conference on the Internet. It will enable individuals who are unable to attend the Congress to engage in discussions led by speakers at the meeting.

The Congress will feature workshops on specific topics ranging from Internet security to virtual and enhanced reality in medicine. Most conferences have a commercial trade exhibition as an integral part and MEDNET 96 is no exception. Visitors to the exhibition will be able to witness the developments made by commercial organisations.

MEDNET 96 also sees the launch of the the European Society of the Internet in Medicine.

We can look forward to a Congress Banquet in the historic Old Ship Hotel. Delegates will be able to enjoy the atmosphere of a room once the scene of performances by Paganini. Our guest speaker will be Professor Sir Harry Kroto of Sussex University, the 1996 Nobel Laurete for Chemistry.

On behalf of the Local Organising Committee of MEDNET 96 I extend a warm welcome to all delegates and particularly our overseas guests. I hope you all have an enjoyable and stimulating Congress.

Clive Baldock
MEDNET 96 Congress Chairman

Virtual Conference

The Virtual Conference has been organised in recognition that many individuals will not be able to attend the congress in person but would like to participate. In addition many of those who are able to attend may wish to engage in further discussion surrounding the principle themes of the conference after the meeting. This virtual conference is intended to fulfill both of those needs. The virtual conference will be offically unveiled on October 14th at the meeting in Brighton and present plans are to keep the conference open at least until the end of November and possibly until the end of 1996. At that time, discussions will be frozen but will remain on-line for others to review.

Proceedings

All accepted abstracts will be published in electronic form on the WWW. The Congress programme and book of abstracts will be published in paper format by the School of Cognitive and Computing Sciences, University of Sussex (CSRP 429) and distributed to all delegates.

Conference proceedings will be published in electronic form on CD-ROM. Further, outstanding papers will be invited for learned journal publication.

In addition there will be the opportunity to visit the exotic Royal Pavilion, home of the Prince Regent during the early nineteenth century, explore the narrow winding Lanes and visit historic castles such as Arundel Castle (where the Madness of King George was filmed) and Hever Castle, home to Anne Boleyn, second wife of Henry VIII. For the more adventurous, the sweeping Sussex countryside can be seen from a hot-air balloon.

European Society of the Internet in Medicine

The European Society of the Internet in Medicine will be launched at MEDNET 96. The aims of the Society will be to promote the use of the Internet in the medical sciences.
