Btec National Diploma in Popular Music

This two-year programme is designed to prepare you for employment in the Music Industry or for Higher Education. It covers all aspects of music recording; an understanding of the Music Business together with the skills required for employment; ëLiveí Performance; Composition and Arrangement. You will be involved with the College Record Label which releases a minimum of two albums each year. The programme aims to enhance your chances of a place in an industry which is very competitive and which often provides irregular and short term employment. We cannot promise to make you a star but we can help you on to a faster track.

Areas of Study include:
ï The creative and performance techniques required for public performance.
ï The organisational and business skills required for public performance.
ï Recording techniques including new technology available  to create and organise sound.
ï How the Music business works: Record Companies, Music Publishers, Managers, Agents, Promoters, Contracts and other legal aspects.
ï Music in the Media: radio jingles and soundbeds, music in computer games and on the internet.
ï Music composition and arrangement.
ï Music keyboard skills.

Entry requirements
This programme appeals to a wide range of students of different ages, experience and educational background. There are no formal requirements but the course is always oversubscribed so all applicants will need to demonstrate that they are well motivated with the ability to successfully complete the course.

Assessment
Throughout the course by way of assignments which are both practical and research-based, leading to the award of the BTEC National Diploma in Popular Music.

Progression and career opportunities
The National Diploma is a well-respected qualification for both Higher Education in the Performing Arts, as well as careers in the Music Industry including the BBC.

Other information
The course puts great emphasis on practical skills. You will have access to 5 multi-track studios and a midi studio with nine midi work stations.

Resources
Resources include 5 multi-track studios: each studio uses ADATS with samplers, noise gates, compressors and FX and has full midi synchronisation. In addition, there is a midi/pre-production suite with nine midi workstations.
